Steelhead are elusive, big, and hard fighting migratory trout! If you’re ready to chase the fish of 1,000 casts, we’re here to teach you everything you need to know.

Ready to take your fishing further? The Frequent Fisher Club gives you free, unlimited access to all 301-level classes plus eight exclusive member benefits, including discounts on trips and courses, early and priority access, member-only fishing opportunities, expert insights, and a connected network of anglers focused on fishing for joy, confidence, and community.
Great lakes Steelhead have a cult-following, and are definitely a sought after species once you’ve caught your fill of driftless area or smallmouth bass. However, they don’t follow the typical trout play book. Anglers will need to retrain their habits when targeting steelhead, starting with your flies, rigging, and water reading.
In this 3hr class, we’ll go in-depth into steelhead biology, habits, and how to find them. We’ll pull out the Brule River Sportsman’s map and TroutRoutes to show you areas to access and explain public vs. private water laws, and other angling etiquette. We’ll examine flies and equipment that work well for steelhead and practice rigging our favorite nymph set-up’s. After tying some knots, we’ll head to the water and practice looking for good steelhead spots and practice casting our big/heavy nymph rigs.
This class is good for intermediate anglers who have taken our 201 class, and are ready to try steelheading on their own. This class will take place at our Bass Camp Cabin in Pine City, and we’ll sue the snake river as a hypothetical steelhead stream to learn water reading and practice casting so you know what to look for when you get up north.
This class is a prerequisite of: DIY Steelhead Camp.
