Learn how to get started ice fishing!

In this 2-hour course we’ll introduce you to the fundamentals of ice fishing so you can feel confident stepping out onto frozen lakes around the Twin Cities Metro. We’ll cover cold-weather safety, ice thickness and travel basics, Minnesota fish ID, and how to understand fishing regulations, then get hands-on with the gear and techniques that make winter fishing simple and fun.
You’ll learn how to:
- Use a basic ice fishing rod or tip-up with monofilament line
- Tie the most important knot for ice fishing (the clinch knot)
- Bait a hook with live bait and safely remove a fish from the line
- Rig a simple ice setup with hook, split shot, and bobber or jig
- Drill or fish an open hole and manage your line in cold conditions
- Read the ice and find fish-holding areas near shore and on small lakes
- Catch panfish like bluegills and crappies, perch, and maybe northern pike through the ice
This class is designed for first-time and beginner anglers who want a safe, supportive way to experience ice fishing and walk away ready to do it on their own. We’ll provide the gear, the guidance, and the warm encouragement—you bring your curiosity and a sense of adventure.
